It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing of Jacky Dowding in a car accident just before Christmas on December 13th, she was just 43 years old. Jacky had joined Friends last year and many of you who attended the November Friends' Get Together will remember her very bubbly and friendly presence. She loved Boscastle and the Museum and we are happy that we were able to share a small part of her life. Deepest sympathies go to her friends and family, particularly her 3 children, her partner, and her good friend Lyn Berriman. Merry Meet and Merry Part and Merry Meet Again.

Notification of witchcraft talk in Exeter

At a recent meeting for the British Association of Friends of Museums I met some attendees from Exeter who informed me of an upcoming talk on Witchcraft in March this year. It sounds very interesting so I thought I'd let people know about it. Hoping to get along myself.

Witchcraft in Exeter 1558-1660

Using new reserach, Mark Stoyle, Prof of Early Modern History at University of Southampton, will tell the story of some of the unfortunate Exeter men and women who were accused of witchraft by their neighbours and show that executions of supposed witches in the city began more than a hundred years earlier than the history books suggest.

Tickets price £5.00, for this lecture, at 7pm on 29 March the Royal Albert Memorial Musem will be available from 16 January.

New Publishing House to Look out For

WyrdBooks is a new publishing house (a virgo, born in September 2011), specialising in literary esoterica and run by non-fiction writer Sinead Spearing and Sian Thomas (poet & editor). We welcome fiction and non-fiction manuscripts on folklore, magic, myth, gnosis, transformation and the transpersonal. Sian Thomas did a stint as poet in residence at the museum a year or so ago and we wish them both success with their new venture.

We've just been sent a lovely new book 'Mummmers, Maypoles and Milkmaids -A Journey Through the English Ritual Year'. This large book is packed with amazing colour photographs and traces some of the many folk traditions and festivals that happen throughout our year. Some of the festivals are centuries old and some are more modern revivals but they are all interesting and the book is required reading for anyone interested in folk traditions. Friends AGM & Get Together

Great time had by all at the recent Get Together at the Wellington Hotel on November 19th. Interesting speakers including Tabitha Cadbury on Folk charms, Simon Costin on the latest news about the Museum of British Folklore, Steve Patterson on the Magic of Boscastle, and Julian Vayne stood in on very short notice speaking on the topic 'What I did on my Holidays' about his recent visit to Nepal. In the evening we had merriment and japes with music from The Jowsters who came up from Penzance, and the local singing group The Boscastle Buoys. Graham led the walk to Joan Wytte's gravestone through Minster woods on the Sunday. Judith Noble stood down as Chair and Elayne Hoskins has taken over this position. Deborah Westmancoat is now Vice Chair as well as membership secretary and Judith will now be secretary. There were a few stalls and a raffle which all helped to raise more funds. We are looking at making changes to the membership year, hoping to introduce rolling membership instead of the April to April timings we have at the moment. Thanks to all for your support throughout the year and we'll see you at the next AGM in 2012.

More Rumours

I'm writing this to allay any fears people may have if they are hearing ridiculous stories about the museum. It seems that despite Graham making it perfectly clear (at the recent PF anniversary meeting and other events) about his plans for the future of the museum, some people are still making up silly rumours and spreading them around the Internet and elsewhere.

Please note that the museum is NOT being sold off to the US, and the collection is NOT being split up and sold piecemeal to the highest bidder. The museum collection is IN TRUST and cannot be sold! The building is owned by Graham.

As most sensible people do, Graham is planning for the time when he will retire which is a few years away yet. Rather than risking the museum's future, he is planning ahead so he can ensure a suitable caretaker is found to lead the museum into its next stage of development. This may be at its current site in Boscastle or it may move somewhere else in the UK, this has not yet been decided.

Understandably our visitors and supporters are concerned about the future of their beloved museum, but no one cares more than Graham and his staff. If anyone has any questions about the plans for the museum's future please email the museumwitchcraft@aol.com and ask. Please don't listen to rumours in pubs, moots, online or anywhere else.

Thanks again to everyone for their support and rest assured the museum is in safe hands.

Attended Witchmarket in Glastonbury last weekend which a great event. lots of stalls and good to see so many friendly faces. The Old Oaks campsite was fabulous as ever - highly recommended - and Adele Clough's new shop & B & B (The Covenstead) are gorge.
Off to the PF 40th celebrations in London this weekend so hopefully we'll catch up with some of our friends up there.
The museum closes on the afternoon of Monday Oct 31st so if you're planning a visit come along before then. We will reopen April 1st 2012. It's been a very busy year so it will be good to have a bit of a break. Graham works 7 days a week during the season so it's nice to take a breath & relax for a while.
The Friends AGM is 19th November at The Welly - email invites & agendas have gone out & postal ones should be arriving shortly.

Tabitha Cadbury Collecting Magic

Tabitha says ~ My talk will focus on one aspect of the Museum of Witchcraft's collection, the everyday charms & amulets used by ordinary folk attempting to 'accentuate the positive' & 'eliminate the negative' in their lives. The objects in question include rubbing stones, moles' feet, WWI soldiers' amulets & Neapolitan glass charms. Using images of similar objects in museums all over England, I will point out how Cecil Williamson's collection interconnects with these through the late C19th & early C20th folklore movement & through collectors such as the prominent London folklorist Edward Lovett. Who collected these powerful things, & how have their meanings changed over time?

Tabitha Cadbury is a museum curator & researcher. She studied anthropology & world arts & has worked for the British Museum, Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, Royal Albert Museum in Exeter & the Scarborough Museums Trust. She is an active member of the Museum Ethnographers Group & currently a Curator of Human History at the Plymouth City Museum. She is planning a doctorate on charms & amulets collections.

It has come to our attention that there is some misinformation out there regarding books donated to the museum's library so I would like to clarify this. All books donated to the library are are placed in the library. If they are duplicates of ones we already have, with the donor's permission, we choose whichever is the lesser quality and sell it to raise funds for the library. We have over 5,000 books as well as hundreds of documents relating to witchcraft and the occult. We have recently added more shelving to accommodate the growing number of books. There is no charge to use the research library but an appointment must be made and we do suggest that researchers become members of Friends. This is not compulsory. Friends is a charity which raises funds for the ongoing preservation of artifacts and books. If anyone has any queries about museum matters please contact the museum directly.

Corn Mother at Museum

We have the pleasure of the company of Gillian Nott this weekend. She is spending today & tomorrow outside the museum doing demonstrations of Corn Dolly making. She is very happy to chat to people about the history of corn dollies as she makes her very beautiful pieces. Here is a pic of Graham in the booth with a couple of Mell Dolls (containing apples) and Gillian herself at her table outside the museum. She is also selling some of her creations for, in my opinion, very modest sums. Gillian will be around tomorrow, Sunday, from around 11am to 4pm so if you're interested come along!

Guardians Of Magic Anniversary Celebration

Apologies fro radio silence recently but things have been very hectic with new books, conferences, new job etc etc etc....... The Guardians of Cornish Magic 60th anniversary celebration day was a great success and we are hoping to hold something similar around May next year. I am currently in talks with Steve Patterson, the chief organiser, as to what we can plan for the agenda.
It was held on May 14th and around 60 people attended on the day to hear talks around the themes of those who had been influential in the Cornwall landscape when it comes to magic, art, and folk tradition. The first talk was on founder of the museum, Cecil Williamson. Kerriann Godwin and Joyce Froome took the audience through a whistle stop tour of this fascinating man's life - from his meetings with wisewomen in both the countryside and the East End of London as a child, his time in Rhodesia with witchdoctors, his life in the Secret Service during WWII, and the development of his museum from the Isle of Man to Boscastle.
Jason Semmens spoke on that interesting collector of Folk tales William Paynter, and Dr Amy Hale flew over from the US to speak on the art and magic of Ithell Colquhoun.
It was a fascinating day and the feedback from everyone was very positive.

We then kicked off the evening with the launch of The Museum of Witchcraft ~ A Magical History - the 60th anniversary book edited by Kerriann Godwin. Thankfully it was a dry & sunny evening so we could all mingle outside the museum. I don't think everyone would have fit inside. It was great fun as everyone who bought a book was trying to get as many signatures as possible from the authors of each of the stories. Charlie & Sharon, a lovely couple who live in Boscastle, made us a gigantic cake with the Richel witch on the icing. It was extremely yummy!

We would just like to say a big thank you for the donation cheque of £47 received which was proceeds from a raffle held at the last PF Wessex conference. The PF is always extremely supportive of the Museum and we really appreciate it.
We also had a much appreciated donation of £156.50 from the Witchfest raffle. The prize was a guided tour through the museum by curator Graham King. We are most grateful for the Children of Artemis' continued support and the money will be put to good use within the museum. Thank you!

We've started a new campaign to ask supporters to write a review of the Museum on Tripadvisor. We have a few 5 star reviews but it would be good if we had more feedback from visitors. Marti Dean has been down here for his birthday weekend and Graham has had him hard at work designing a new poster to request people to leave Tripadvisor feedback. Marti is well placed to get creative and design the poster as he's a teacher of computer graphics. He's using an image of a Green Man sculpture which is in the upper gallery. Simon Costin Hits the Big Time

Simon, director of the upcoming Museum of British Folklore, has been getting some first hand experience at running a museum by helping out with us here in Boscastle. He's here for a few weeks learning about the ins and outs of museum administration, retail, visitor enquiries etc. Here he is writing an article about the museum's 60th anniversary for the Boscastle Parish magazine The Blowhole . Pat has kindly written a fun anecdote about Gerald Gardner regarding a ritual sword and his trouser leg. Most amusing. The book has been selling really well. They will be available to purchase online at www.theoccultartcompany.co.uk by the end of this week and will be on sale in the Museum later today. Pre-orders will be attended to during the week as well. The retail price is £30.00 and a significant percentage of profits will be donated to The friends of the Museum of Witchcraft.

There has been great feedback about the book already as I took some pre-launch copies to the PF Wessex Conference yesterday and sold a few there. The book launch on May 14th is looking like it will be well attended so looking forward to that!

It was with some sadness but much pride that we took possession of the late Iain Steele's ritual tools and altar pieces at his home in Wales last week. We met with his wife Mary and son Andrew who passed over these items and we are very pleased to have them. Some pieces, mainly his stangs, are already on display but the plan is to show the altar as it was in its entirety so that will be done over this winter ready for display next year. here is a photo of Graham and Mary at Iain's altar.

A great day was had by all at the Devon Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Pagan Federation meeting in March recently and we'd just like to say thank you so much for the £150 donation made to the Museum as part of proceeds from the day's raffle. The cheque arrived only a week after the event so well done for being so organised.

It was great to have a Museum stall there so we could reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Morgana from PF International was there and told us about her plans for the new online version of her magazine Wiccan Rede. Joyce Froome came along and signed copies of her book Wicked Enchantments which has sold extremely well. We've just had to reorder for the season as we only have 2 left.

Jo O'Cleirigh was fabulous as ever speaking on his work on Egyptian archaeological digs and everyone seemed to particularly enjoy the photos of some rather priapically enhanced statues that his team discovered. Vivienne Crowley spoke on a new book she is planning on the Hare, and Graham gave a round up on what's happening at the Museum including a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday to kick off our 60th anniversary. Well done to Judith and all the organisers for their hard work in making this yet another successful event.

We're still awaiting the donation from the raffle at Witchfest in November last year. The winners of the raffle have booked their guided tour of the Museum in the next two weeks so we're looking froward to meeting them. I'll pop some photos of the PF event on shortly.

Hot Floor Action

Graham & Dee have been a pair of old scrubbers this week as they try to transform the upper gallery floor that has been caked with 6 years of varnish & grime. We were going to replace the flooring but at around £600 it was just too expensive so with some specialist floor cleaning products & much elbow grease I think it's coming up a treat. Not sure if this pic shows it well enough but there is a distinct difference between scrubbed & unscrubbed.

German translation

Great news for German visitors. We have just received a full German translation of the guide book from Susanna Supper who visited the Museum last year and offered us a free translation. We will be putting the information onto laminated cards next to the accompanying exhibits as we have with the French translations.

60th Anniversary Book

Well all is very exciting as I have just sent the 60th anniversary book 'The Museum of Witchcraft~A Magical History' off to the printers today. A total of 47 people have put forward their essays/poems/artworks which have been collected in this book which will originally be published as a cloth bound limited edition of 250 copies. It also contains a short Cecil Williamson biography, an article Cecil wrote about his museums, a rundown on the Richel Eldermans Collection & a piece on the 2004 flood. 1100 Cecil Williamson - Life of an Occultist by Kerriannn Godwin and Joyce Froome

Williamson founded of The Museum of Witchcraft 60 years ago in 1951 and this talk looks at his fascinating life before and after the Museum’s inception.

1215 The Cornish Witchfinder: William Henry Paynter by Jason Semmens

Paynter was a folklorist, antiquary & bard of the Cornish Gorsedd who collected witch-stories & folklore during the 1920s & 30s. His writings are the last great collection of Cornish Folklore.

1415 Ithell Colquhoun’s Magical Cornwall by Dr Amy Hale (anthropologist)

Surrealist artist, poet and essayist, Colquhoun had a passionate relationship with Cornwall whiich lasted over 40 years. We look at her art, writings and magic and see how her perspectives on Cornwall intersected with wider cultural movements such as Cornish nationalism, the earth mysteries movement and the development of Paganismin the latter half of the 20th century.

Due to the ever-increasing numbers of books which are being donated, the library is expanding into the kitchen. Graham is busy painting and putting up shelves in readiness for an onslaught of news books. On the subject of books, the anniversary book is going well with all submissions in and most of the author biographies done. Designing the cover this week so hopefully it can get to the printers by end Feb. Fingers crossed. Steve Patterson is organising a day of talks to go along with the book launch for May 14th. We are confirming it this week so I'll let you know details shortly.

Database

Just a quick update on the database - all is going well with the data entry and it is proving a great boon to researchers. We have heard there are people who may have issues with the database. If any one has any concerns please contact the museum directly so we can address any problems personally. We always prefer people to have a dialogue with us directly rather than having misinformation spread around. Hannah is looking after things at the moment and Graham will be available from Feb 9th. So once again please speak to Graham directly for any information regarding the museum. It will be the best place to find out the facts.

We hope everyone has a fabulous Yule Fest. The museum may open tomorrow December 25 for a few hours in the middle of the day so if you're around do pop in. The AGM went very well and we voted to change the date so next year will be earlier - we'll announce this when the date has been finalised. Thanks to Willow Moon in Tintagel who had collected around £75 for Friends of the museum during the year. We also raised around £90 through the raffle. More news and pics soon.

What a fab weekend was had by all at our latest AGM & Get Together. It was sad that quite a number of Friends were unable to attend due to the weather but we hope to see you next year. Speakers included Professor Martin Smith from Bournemouth University who spoke on the research he's been carrying out on 'Harriett', the tarred skull. His talk was exceptionally well illustrated with moving CAT Scan pictures of Harriet and the feedback from attendees was very positive. Then John Smart spoke on the history of The Regency & The Royal Windsor Coven which was enlightening and we look forward to his future writings on the subject. Joyce Froome (museum historian) spoke on Magic in Christianity - inspired by the museum's new exhibition then Judith Noble spoke on Kenneth Anger & 'Luciferian London', showing his short film 'Invocation of My Demon Brother'. The AGM followed where trustees were re-elected and we welcome a new member to the team, Nick Miller. Some changes were agreed, the main one being changing the date of the next AGM so the museum can wind up for the year earlier and also so Boscastle will be more open (ie shops etc) when people come down to visit. More on exact dates later.

The day was wound up with a showing of the fab new video of the museum which was done by Tom Chick & Flo Kennard who won a competition to film it. Tom came down from Edinburgh to be there for the launch and answer questions. The film can be viewed here .

Friends Weekend

Busy with preparations for the Friends weekend. We're heavily booked this year so hoping we can fit everyone in. Meeting in the Welly bar Friday evening fro drinks before Saturday's full day of talks. We'll also have tarot readings Saturday evening courtesy of Eileen Blacklock. Witchfest

Thanks to Merlyn and the organisers of Witchfest - we had a great day at the event promoting Friends of The Museum of Witchcraft and selling products to raise money for the museum. We met some great people there as well! Graham's new stand design was a hit especially when I was trying to put it up and take it down. Great amusement for anyone watching! The main raffle prize on the day was a private tour of the museum for one person plus 12 of their friends. The lucky winners will have Graham King take them behind the scenes to see the archives and learn the stories behind some of the artifacts. This prize is going to be offered at some events next year to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the museum (50yrs in Boscastle).

Apologies for minimal blogging recently - have been having trouble getting into the programme from my computer so have only been able to do snippets from my computer. A fair bit of action has been happening in the last few weeks - we've had artist Mat Chivers down working on drawings for an upcoming exhibition he's having in January at the Maddox Gallery in Mayfair in January 2011. He's chosen some interesting pieces - a dark mirror, scrying ball, and Golden Dawn staff so far. I've popped in a photo of Mat working in the library. His work has been largely sculptural until recently. You can see some of his art at his website www.matchivers.com .

I've been off at a couple of stalls recently - firstly the witchmarket in Glastonbury (organised by Adrian Bryn-Evans) which went very well and may become an annual event. Here's a pic of the stall showing rather creased tablecloth and our membership secretary who also sells her own amber & jet necklaces and homemade soaps. I also had a preview of Adele Clough's new B & B 'The Covenstead' which promises to be a fabulous witchy venue to stay in when visiting Glastonbury. Yesterday I went along to the Cornwall antiquarian Society meeting in Helston which was a little quieter but they had some excellent speakers including Jason Semmens and Paul Broadhurst. Our next appearance will be at London's Witchfest where four of the Trustees of friends will be there with the Museum and Occult Art Company stall to sell Museum items and answer people's questions.

Joyce and I will be up at the Moot With No Name (organised by Geraldine Beskin of Atlantis Books) on November 24th where Joyce will speak on her new book 'Wicked Enchantments' about the Pendle Witch Trials and I will be her beautiful assistant (cough).

Work on the anniversary book is coming along nicely after a weird hiccup within the Indesign programme we are using - kept crashing for some reason - maybe it doesn't like witches - but Graham seems to have sorted it out with help from the Adobe team and it's full steam ahead from here on in. I have a couple of printers in mind but I may be on the lookout for a good copy editor who would be willing to volunteer to check the book before it finally goes to production. More news soon as I seem to have fixed my blogger problem.

Mother Shipton Missing

Either a very brave or a very stupid person has stolen a Mother Shipton statue from her perch in the Images section of the museum. We're not sure how long she's been gone but most things stolen from us return sooner or later due to strange happenings to the thief. So beware if you see one on ebay - it may or may not be ours. I attach a photograph of the missing statue and the spot where she once stood.

We are keenly awaiting the new book by Mike Howard, 'West Country Witches', which is due out next month. It is being published by Three Hands Press who have just launched 'The Occult Reliquary' for The Museum of Witchcraft. In this book Mike examines the witchcraft and sorcery practised by historical witches, charmers, cunning folk and pellars of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire and also the faery lore of these counties. Should be a good read!

Stolen Guide Books

Very busy in the museum at the moment as you can imagine so it was really irritating to discover that someone had stolen our large print guide books yesterday. We provide the guides for those who have difficulty with reading small print as part of our programme to be as accessible as possible for those with a disability. Graham had to spend most of the day redoing the guides as they had disappeared from the computer. I wonder how long it will take for them to be returned - most things that are stolen from the museum are returned quite soon - I have no idea why!!:)))

We had a great time with the students from New Jersey who recently came over to assist with our database. They were extremely friendly, helpful & professional - a credit to their Professor, the lovely Shelley. We had a couple of excursions out & about - walked the coast path to Tintagel & went out to Stannen Stone Circle & the Logan stone nearby. I think we'll see a few of them back next year. New Book Donations

Two authors have recently donated their latest books to the museum library. Emma Wilby’s book ‘The Visions of Isobel Gowdie’ includes a full transcript of the Scottish witch Isobel Gowdie’s famous, but often misunderstood, confession. It also contains a wealth of other material such as examples of fairy lore in trial records. Like Emma’s previous book, ‘Cunning Folk and Familiar Spirits’, it is a fascinating and insightful study, and explores the connections between early modern magic and shamanic traditions.

After reading about Joyce’s book, Mary Sharratt, who lives near Pendle, has sent us her novel ‘Daughters of the Witching Hill’, which tells the story of the Pendle case from the point of view of two of the suspects, Elizabeth Southerns and her granddaughter Alizon Device. It is a moving account, which conveys the toughness and resourcefulness of cunning folk, and contains some wonderfully evocative and convincing descriptions of magic. Here are a few photos of Joyce's book launch last Saturday. We had around 45 people attending - a glass of wine on arrival followed by a 30 minute talk by Joyce & her glamorous assistant Kerriann in the upstairs gallery, then onto The Wellington Hotel for a bevvie & a meal. Quite a number of her books were sold to the adoring public so we can't wait to hear what they think. Thanks to Harbour Lights cafe across the car park for lending us their chairs. Deborah, the membership secretary for Friends, came down to help out in the booth on the day. We'll soonn be selling some of her fabulous amber & jet necklaces in the shop along with her herbal bath products. We aslo have some interesting publishing ideas of our own - we'll keep you posted when things are happening.

Altar Box For Sale

We have been asked to notify people of the sale of a beautiful 'portable' altar that is for sale. The measurements are:

Wide 37 inches (94 cm) x high 19 inches (48 cm) x deep 19 inches (48 cm)

I have attached two photos of the altar. One is closed and the other is open and shows all the storage space

that was used for everything needed at an open ritual. There is a photo of it being used in the museum. The altar has been in constant use by the House of the Old Ways since it was first purchased in the 1980s.

The guide price is £150 but the owners are open to offers as they are interested in it going to a good home.

A most unpleasant experience greeted Hannah & Graham as they opened the museum on Friday - someone had placed a rather 'well-thumbed' (so to speak) pornographic magazine through the letter box. Graham will be going through the CCTV footage to see if he can discover the culprit & he is considering reinstating the web cam. The police have been informed as we do with any untoward activity like this and they have been very supportive and are keeping an eye out on their patrols. It occurred between 8 and 9 am Friday morning. There are some very strange people out there!

Joyce's Lancaster Book Launch

April 17 was a busy day for all at the museum as we had Scarlett Imprint's launch of Dartura in the museum itself & Joyce Froome, our historian, had her very own book launch up in Pendle. Joyce's book 'Wicked Enchantments' focuses on The Pendle Witches and the magic used in their era.
Here is a photo of Joyce with Jacqui Leviston. Jacqui was one of the people behind the Lancashire Witch Project,which organised a touring exhibition about the Pendle Witches.When the exhibition was over they kindly donated some of their displays to The Museum of Witchcraft.They also arranged for a plaque commemorating the witches to be put up in Lancaster's Golden Lion Hotel.
We're planning a book launch for Joyce in the museum - probably 29th May. We'll let you know when the date is finalised. 'Wicked Enchantments' will shortly be available form the museum or online at The Occult Art Company.

Poet in Residence

For the last week we've the lovely Sian Thomas as 'poet in residence' for the Museum of Witchcraft. Sian, who has also been poet in residence at Tunbridge Wells Museum, hails from East Sussex and has quite a body of work behind her. She has been published in Agenda and The Telegraph & won the Chapter One competition last year. She chose our museum because "it's so amazing and is such an inspiration". She has been sitting up near the goddess display chatting with gusts and getting inspiration for future poems. When asked what display inspired her most she found it hard to pin down but said she felt most moved by a small bird wrapped lovingly in a blanket which was found in the beams above someone's bed. I'm hoping to post one of Sian's poems here in the near future.

Farewell Iain Steele

It was with great sadness we recently learnt of the passing to spirit of Iain Steele, a man well know in witch circles especially in Wales. Iain was a true gentleman and was recently involved in promoting the art of the pagan world with his Ludlow Conference for the Society of Pagan Arts. We have lit a candle in our shrine for him. He will be sadly missed. Merry meet & merry part & merry meet again.

Steve Patterson has carved a fabulous sign for the new Christian Magic display. Here he is looking suitably serious holding the sign. Steve is well known for his one off carvings, copper & bone athames, dark scrying mirrors & tarot boxes. It was certainly a hive of activity in the museum over the weekend with the lovely Simon Costin designing and putting together our new window display. Simon is an internationally renowned art director and we're so happy he was able to come down and spruce up our window. He made the fab crow by hand and we love the whole new look! I believe there may be a piece of chiffon in the mail as a finishing touch to the cauldron. It was also Simon's birthday so we hope he had a good time. We also have the lovely Spencer & Craig & Roger in the museum wielding paintbrushes & drills as they helped with the finishing touches before the museum opens. Here are a few pics of them as well.

Graham has been kept on his toes over the last weekend as two volunteers came down to help with preparations for the museum's 2010 season. They worked really hard & made a big difference - painting, drilling, moving objects around, putting skirting boards up ............ the list goes on. Had a lovely day yesterday rearranging some of the modern witchcraft display, mainly the Stewart Farrar & Brownie Pate section. It's such a privilege to handle the magical objects that once belonged to such interesting people ad know they are being cared for in a respectful environment. As you may know Graham has donated all the artifacts in the museum to the Trust for the Preservation of the Boscastle Museum of Witchcraft so the collection will always remain together. Here I am with Brownie's elf doll - one of my favourite artifacts.

Volunteers Respond

Our first volunteer turned up for duty today and was busy waxing & polishing some new cabinets for the 'Images' display as PF conference attendees came to visit. Though not officially open it is a tradition at allow PF visitors to have a look around the museum on the Sunday after the event....it's great to see the same friendly faces each year & indeed some new people as well. Quite a few have decided to join Friends of the Museum now that they see what a benefit it is to the museum.

Work Begins on Christian Magic

Our lovely hare is moving to a new space in the museum............she will be sitting in the space vacated by the automaton by the stone circle. Graham has been doing a lot of work on the surrounds including moon lighting, mirrors, & plinth. She looks amazing & it's a logical place for a hare to be, by the circle in moonlight. Lovely!

Farewell Automaton

You may remember the lovely

automaton which sat in the area around the stone circle in the museum. Well last weekend we reluctantly returned it to the maker Alan Manktelow over in Eastbourne. As part of our annual revitalisation of the museum, we realised we needed more space in this area, so unfortunately it had to go back. It was refurbished by Alan after the flood as it had been flung around quite a bit & was under water for a time. Alan is looking for a new home for the automaton so if anyone has any ideas please contact the museum & we'll put Alan in touch with you. Fare thee well!

Too Much Wind

Just before the end of last year we had a rather full-on wind storm in Boscastle and our fabulous sign 'Selling The Wind' painted by the lovely Vivienne Shanley was blown down and damaged. Graham has had the painting repaired and it will be reframed by Andy of The Old Forge Gallery up the road. It should be reinstated to its usual place above the window of the museum before we reopen at Easter.

This image is available as a greeting card from the museum shop but we have now discontinued the other cards painted by Vivienne. They will be replaced by a new range of cards based on the Richel Eldermans collection, reproduction Good Luck cards and other images from the museum. We did have a small selection last year but should have a larger range for 2010.

Work Begins so Volunteers Prepare for Action

Lots happening at the museum at the moment in readiness for the 2010 season.Graham has started work on installing the new Phillips lighting system which was donated by Friends Thanks to Phillips for supplying a large number of sample bulbs when Graham was researching the project. They should save money in the long run, be more ecologically friendly, and give a better light to the objects. To those volunteers who registered an interest in helping with the installation project, could you please either phone or email Graham at the museum to organise a time to come in and help out - that would be much appreciated.

As well as the lighting there are many other areas where volunteers can help, from cleaning displays to touching up paintwork so please get in touch & we'll slot you in. We are very grateful to all those who help out each year.

Another project happening at the moment is the replacement of some of the glass panels in the front window with panel board so that we can affix browsers for the Richel Eldermans prints. The prints are selling really well online and with the launch of 'The Occult Reliquary' shortly we expect demand to rise. Retail space is limited in the entrance area so we're trying to be creative and utilise the available area to its full capacity. Here is Graham working on the window.

And, exciting news, it looks like Simon Costin, internationally renowned designer and curator of the new Museum of British Folklore, has agreed to design our 2010 front window display. More on that later.

Work Begins Again

Hannah has done a great job holding the fort over the past couple of months but now it's back to work for Graham as he gets busy in the museum, readying it for opening at Easter. The biggest project is the new lighting which the Friends of the Museum have been so much a part of funding. Graham will shortly be calling on the volunteers who offered assistance at the Friends' December Get Together for practical help in the installation.

The Occult Art Company which sells museum items was extremely busy over xmas with a particular run on the new witch weather vanes, glass knitting needles and the Richel-Eldermans' prints. We are replenishing the prints as we speak so if you've been watching the website our stock levels should be back to normal by mid next week.

The book 'The Occult Reliquary' which relates to the Richel-Eldermans collection is due for publication end March/Early April and pre-orders are coming in quickly. If you would like information on the book or to reserve a copy please email Kerriann at kg@theoccultartcompany.co.uk . Three Hands Press are the publishers of three limited edition versions so we know the quality will be excellent and will become a real collectors' item in the future.

Our historian Joyce Froome's book 'Wicked Enchantments' is getting closer to publication as well. She has been doing talks around Cornwall and London based on the book and has an article in this month's Pagan Dawn. Speaking of Pagan Dawn there is a very good review of the museum's new Ouija Board in there. Graham designed the board based on the Richel - Eldermans images and it's been very popular so far.

Hamish Miller

It was with great sadness that we learnt of the passing to spirit of Hamish Miller in January this year. Hamish has been a great friend to Graham & the museum over the years. He was well known through his books on sacred landscapes and dowsing and made the dowsing rods which we sell in the museum. He was also well known for being a thoroughly lovely chap. We send our sympathies Ba & his family & friends. Merry Meet & Merry Part & Merry Meet Again

After a fabulous Friends' meeting the museum is now well & truly closed for the season. We will open again at Easter next year. Our membership has already outstripped last year's & Graham has already ordered the new lighting, the funds for which were handed over by Friends at the AGM.

Our membership dates have changed to coincide with the opening of the museum so new members will get a few extra months free as this year's lasts till April 2011. We have already reached half our target membership for the year so if you want to help spur it along by becoming a Friend or promoting it at your Moot please contact Deborah our membership secretary at friendsbmw@googlemail.com & she can help you with both joining & getting hold of application forms.

Hannah is ably holding the fort at both the museum & The Occult Art Company while we take a short break in Brittany. I'll aim to keep the blog up to date while away - WiFi permitting.

Friends Meeting 2009

From the feedback we've had so far the Friends Get Together & AGM was one of our best yet! Over 60 people attended the event to see Simon Costin speak on the development of his project the Museum of British Folklore and Helen Cornish talk on Joan Wytte: The Fighting Fairy Woman of Bodmin. Unfortunately Geraldine Beskin was unable to attend so Levannah Morgan gallantly stepped in at very short notice and spoke on Spirit Contact the Cecil Williamson Way. Geraldine has kindly offered to speak next year. We all raised a glass to our Honorary President Adrian Bryn-Evans & his wife Anne who, unfortunately, were unable to join us.

The whole day had a distinct feeling of Folklore & traditions and the evening event was full of lively folk singing with the very first public appearance of Graham King & Kerriann Godwin singing The Chase Song from the museum's CD 'Songs of Witchcraft & Magic'.

At the AGM we welcomed our new treasurer Martin Shepheard & it was a great pleasure to hand over a large cheque to Graham for a project he will be undertaking in February. All the lighting in the museum will be transferred over to lower voltage, more cost effective bulbs & tracking. This will ensure a long term saving on electricity bills for the museum and will be a much greener option than the current bulbs used. A softer illumination is given which is beneficial to the artifacts as well.

Membership has already overtaken last year's figures thanks to the hard work of membership secretary Deborah Westmancoat, and we're already putting together a programme for next year's meeting. I think it may have a more Ritual Magic feel but more of that later.

The following morning a few stalwarts made the annual pilgrimage to Joan's headstone up near Minster Church while others visited the museum. Thanks to The Wellington Hotel who hosted the event & being as helpful as ever. Hopefully we'll see more of you next year. I had to include this fabulous photo of Ray looking gorgeous & amusing.

The Friends of the Museum of Witchcraft meeting is on next weekend Dec 5 at The Wellington Hotel 1030 to 1700. speakers include Geraldine Beskin, Simon Costin & Helen Cornish. Free entrance to Friends or those wishing to join on the day. A walk to the Joan Wytte memorial stone on Sunday 6th. Hope to see you there.
